The Two-Finger Balance Test Every Homeowner Should Know

By Jesse Clark, Owner · May 7, 2026

A properly balanced garage door takes almost all of its weight off the opener. That means a quieter door, a longer-lasting opener, and a much smaller chance of a surprise failure. Here's how to check yours in about a minute.

How to run the test

  1. Close the door fully.
  2. Pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener.
  3. Lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go.

A balanced door stays put. If it drifts down or springs up, the spring tension is off.

What an unbalanced door costs you

An unbalanced door forces the opener to do work it wasn't designed for, burning out gears and logic boards early. It's also a safety issue. Spring adjustment is high-tension work — leave it to a tech with the right bars.
