Learn about how to properly maintain them – saving you time, money and prolong the life of your garage door system.
What is a Spring?
A mechanical spring is a versatile device that has the ability to absorb and distribute force. It stores and releases mechanical energy consisting of a coiled or stretched wire that can be compressed or extended. From automotive to aerospace – whether it’s providing suspension in vehicles or maintaining tension in machinery, mechanical springs are essential for smooth and efficient operations.
What is a Garage Door Spring?
It is a mechanical spring that is manufactured to support the weight of a garage door. The spring makes it easier to open and close the steel/wooden panels. Working in tandem with the garage door opener, the spring counterbalances the door’s weight, reducing strain on the motor. When the door is opened, the spring stores energy, and when closed, it releases that energy to assist in lifting the garage door.
Springs Going Bad?
Listen for unusual noises, such as creaking or grinding sounds. Watch for a noticeable imbalance in the garage door’s movement or difficulty in opening and closing. Keep an eye out for visible signs of wear, like rust or fraying.
1. Visual Inspection – Each month look for signs of wear, such as rust, cracks, or gaps in the coils. If you notice any damage, it’s essential to address it promptly. You know what they say – a home that is not maintained by the homeowner will suddenly collapse! In this case, the garage door may not open and we don’t want that happening.
2. Lubrication – This will maintain smooth operation of your garage door springs. Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the springs. Make sure each spring is well-coated. This will reduce friction and prevent premature wear. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt and debris, leading to potential damage.
3. Balance Check – A properly balanced garage door puts less strain on the springs, prolonging their lifespan. Every month do the following – disconnect the garage door opener and manually open the garage door halfway. If it stays in place, it’s balanced. If it falls or rises, it indicates an imbalance that can strain the garage door springs.
4. Avoid Excessive Use – Be smart about how many times you use the garage door opener – limit the number of times by limiting unnecessary usage. Additionally, avoid hanging heavy objects on the door, as this can strain the springs.
